Congressman Fitzgerald's First Month in Congress

January 29, 2021

As I wrap up my first month in Congress there is a lot to reflect on. My office is at your service and I am proud to say we fielded 166 calls and 4,858 emails from the people of the 5th District. Hearing from constituents is what drives my work in Congress, and the messages I’ve heard over the last month are loud and clear: there is a lot of work ahead for Congress. I am proud to represent Southeast Wisconsin, and I promise to keep fighting for Wisconsin values in my new role.

Here are a few highlights from January:

Met with Workers from Michels Corp.

Following President Biden’s misguided decision to cancel construction on the Keystone XL pipeline, I joined my colleagues Reps. Bryan Steil and Glenn Grothman at Michels Corp. to speak with workers who were directly impacted by the President’s unilateral decision.

Just hours after he was sworn into office, with the stroke of a pen, President Biden robbed Wisconsin workers of high paying jobs by stopping construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. I sent a joint letter with Congressmen Bryan Steil, Mike Gallagher, Glenn Grothman, and Tom Tiffany to President Biden urging him to reconsider his decision to halt construction on the Keystone XL pipeline.

As long as I represent the 5th District, I will fight for jobs and against politicians who unilaterally destroy Wisconsin livelihoods.

Received my Committee Assignments for the 117th Congress

In the 117th Congress I will serve on the JudiciaryEducation and Labor, and Small Business Committees.

The Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over matters relating to intellectual property, the administration of justice in federal courts, administrative bodies, and law enforcement agencies; the Education and Labor Committee has jurisdiction over legislative matters that empower students, workers, job creators, and families; and the House Small Business Committee has jurisdiction over legislative matters that impact America’s small businesses.

I take my assignment to these new roles seriously, and I hope to work with my colleagues in delivering relief from burdensome government mandates that have plagued workers, students, and small business owners. Access to good paying jobs, quality education, and advocating for pro-business policies are a few of the priorities I look forward to championing for the 5th District.

Advocated for Pro-Life Principles

Today marks the 48-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade. In the years that have passed since, more than 62 million children have been deprived of their most basic right: life.

In just my first month here in Congress, I have taken multiple actions to defend unborn children who cannot defend themselves. President Biden has already taken an anti-life stance just two weeks into his presidency, and his actions must be met with a clear and strong message of opposition.

I joined 199 of my Republican colleagues in sending a letter to congressional leadership reaffirming my commitment to the Hyde Amendment & protecting unborn lives. I also joined my colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden urging him to reverse his decision allowing American tax dollars to fund abortions in foreign countries. Importantly, I am cosponsoring a bill that requires appropriate medical care for children who survive abortion procedures and imposes strong criminal penalties for failure to provide such care. The bill, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, is an important step in changing our culture to make abortions unthinkable.

That’s a wrap for this week’s eNewsletter! Follow me on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date on my work for the 5th District of Wisconsin.

Sincerely,

Scott Fitzgerald
Member of Congress
